Andy Carroll would be odd but a worthy choice to deputise for Kane

Tottenham are keeping an eye on former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll as a possible short-term deputy to the injured Harry Kane, according to the Sun.

Tottenham have had a decent season this term on the back of becoming the first team in Premier League history to ever begin a new season without making a single addition from the transfer market to strengthen their squad.

While Pochettino was obviously confident in the talent he had at his disposal, it was still always going to be a massive risk in what is probably the most adaptive league in the world.

Six months into the campaign and Tottenham find themselves at 3rd place with a 4-point gap separating them from 4th-placed London rivals Chelsea. Spurs have 51 points on the board and are a whole 5 points off 2nd-placed Manchester City and 9 behind Liverpool at the top.

As it turns out, with 23 games of the season behind us, Spurs are facing an absolute squad crisis. Harry Kane is out until March after he picked up a knock in the dying embers of the Manchester United tie. Heung-Min Son has been permitted to represent South Korea in the AFC Asian Cup.

Dele Alli picked up a hamstring injury in the recent 2-1 win against Fulham and Sissoko’s groin strain is going to keep him out for at least another week. All this added to concerns about Eric Dier and Lucas Moura’s match fitness will toughen Pochettino’s job tenfold in the coming weeks.

With Llorente as the only viable striking option, it is about time Spurs final delve into the market to find the ideal player to come in and cover for Harry at least in the short-term.

Andy Carroll is the surprise name that has emerged according to the Sun. He could be available for purchase for as low as £2m as his contract is set to expire at the end of the year.

He is a 6ft 4in English monster who made a name for himself at Newcastle before eventually being scouted and signed by Liverpool.

His time at Anfield was ridden with injuries and he was eventually sold to West Ham after two and a half seasons at the club. He has been a West Ham player since 2013 and is yet to nail down the starting role.

Having made just 8 appearances this season, he could be a good addition to this Spurs side. His aerial ability and top-quality hold-up play will allow the runners in the Spurs team to get in behind the opposition defenders while his movement in between the lines can cause havoc.

This has the potential to be a season-saving move by Pochettino and for all the terrible seasons Carroll has had in the Premier League, this could finally be the one that changes his career, at 30.
