Why Steven Bergwijn would be a fantastic long-term investment for Tottenham

Tottenham have struggled throughout the campaign so far. Although they put up a spirited display at Anfield in their last outing, they were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool.

Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t shied away from ringing the changes consistently this season, as he continues to search for his best side. The performances of Danny Rose, Dele Alli, Harry Winks, Christian Eriksen and Serge Aurier have all come under heavy scrutiny.

Now, Eriksen has entered the final year of his contract. He is one of the most gifted players in the Premier League and has single-handedly dragged Tottenham through games in the last few seasons.

In the Dane’s last three seasons in the Premier League, his numbers have been nothing short of fantastic. With 23 goals and assists in the 2016/17 season followed by 21 goals in the 2017/18 season, losing Eriksen would leave a real hole in Tottenham’s squad.

The likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura have got it in them to score goals in abundance but the 27-year-old’s importance to the squad just cannot be explained.

But with Eriksen’s future far from certain, Pochettino must bring in someone to fill his void in January. As per a report from Sky Sports, Tottenham were one of the European clubs interested in signing PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn in the summer.

No deal materialized before the start of the season but Tottenham certainly should test PSV Eindhoven’s resolve in January.

Steven Bergwijn, 22, is one of Europe’s brightest young talents and he polished his credentials further by netting 15 goals and registering 13 assists last season. The Dutch speedster enjoyed a superb 2018/19 and it is only a matter of time before he completes a big-money move elsewhere.

The 22-year-old can play on either flank and he might be a smart addition to Tottenham’s ranks. He could potentially form a deadly understanding with the likes of Son, Kane and Moura.

Bergwijn is a young, hungry and talented player who would also fit Pochettino’s criteria of signing young players.

Verdict

Spurs have to fight tooth and nail to finish in the top four, which is why they must move for Bergwijn when the transfer window reopens. Suffice to say, he would be an excellent long-term investment.
