Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should swoop in for Patrick Cutrone?

According to a report from Calciomercato, cash-strapped AC Milan are hoping to sell striker Patrick Cutrone this summer.

Milan find themselves in a rut at the moment, having been banned from the 2019/20 Europa League after breaching Financial Fair Play regulations. As a result, they are forced to cash in on one of their most exciting academy graduates in recent years.

At the age of just 21, Patrick Cutrone has been a regular at AC Milan for two seasons now and he has already scored 27 goals for one of Italy’s greatest clubs. He had a very underwhelming last campaign, though, managing just three goals and two assists in 34 Serie A games.

Nevertheless, available for a potential bargain fee of €25 million, Tottenham should reignite their interest in Cutrone.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been busy in the ongoing transfer market after going two transfer windows without signing a player. He has signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon and Jack Clarke from Leeds United, although the latter has returned to the Elland Road on a season-long loan.

After strengthening his midfield with the addition of Ndombele, Pochettino should shift his focus towards finding a striker prepared to cover and compete with Harry Kane.

The likes Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente have failed to cut the mustard, and with the latter’s contract having technically ran out on June 30, Spurs need to find a player that is capable of easing the goalscoring burden off Kane.

Kane has spent two spells on the sidelines this year with ankle problem and that should worry Pochettino ahead of the new campaign. Despite Son Heung-min stepping up impressively, the England international’s absence is telling and the Tottenham tactician should address the problem by signing Cutrone.

Cutrone lost his place in the Milan side last season to Polish striker Krzysztof Piatek, managing to find the back of the net only nine times in his 43 league and cup appearances. But he looks a perfect fit for Spurs and the Premier League due to his traditional, aggressive style of play.

In terms of his attributes, the Italian possesses a good turn of pace on the ball, can dribble past defenders in tight areas to open up space in between the lines and create chances for his teammates.

The 21-year-old is a fine finisher in front of goal and is good at closing people down without the ball to help the team.

Cutrone’s off the ball work rate is excellent and despite coming in for criticism last season, it must be remembered that the striker is still only 21.

He has a high ceiling as far as the potential is concerned and could develop into one of Europe’s lethal poachers in the future under the watchful eyes of Pochettino.

Verdict

Hence, Tottenham shouldn’t hesitate to splash the cash and sign Cutrone from Milan this summer.
