Tottenham had a busy transfer deadline day landing two players but missed out on Paulo Dybala (h/t BBC).
The Argentine was linked with a move away from Juventus and Manchester United were also interested in the 25-year-old, but the BBC claims that the deal fell through due to Dybala’s wage demands.
It was a difficult season for Dybala last time around as he only managed five goals in the Serie A. Cristiano Ronaldo was the hero for the side as they lifted another league title, however, Juve missed out on the Champions League title.
Nabbing Dybala would have been an incredible end to the transfer window, but Spurs should still do well without the Argentine.
The Daily Mail (h/t Sun) claimed that Dybala wanted £300,000-a-week as wages, which is £50,000 more than highest earner Harry Kane.
Kane has been one of the top players in the world and earned that pay rise in his Tottenham contract. Dybala is a quality footballer but paying him a crazy amount could have had a huge effect on our future dealings.
Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld are out of contracts at the end of the season, and if we were to negotiate with them, they could bring up Dybala’s wages.
Alexis Sanchez is being paid a crazy amount at Manchester United and David de Gea, at one point, was unwilling to sign a new deal until they were close to the Chile international’s (h/t Telegraph).
Dybala would have played behind Harry Kane, though he could have started alongside the Englishman.
Spurs, however, landed an attacking midfielder in Giovani Lo Celso on loan. The Argentine can also do a similar role, however, he isn’t as attack–minded as Dybala.
Lo Celso is coming off a fantastic season with Real Betis and broke into the Argentina squad for the Copa America.
The 23-year-old could be one of the best signings of the summer if Pochettino helps Lo Celso develop further.
Based on form, Lo Celso is the better signing while Dybala struggled in the previous campaign. Landing Dybala on an expensive deal with huge wages and not seeing him perform would have been a major blow.
Tottenham have been burnt in the past with some signings not working out well (Vincent Janssen is just one example).
Dybala was a risky signing and Spurs have done well to avoid it. Pochettino has a well-balanced side and with the additions of Tanguy Ndombele in the midfield, they should be stronger than last season.
Spurs were one of the clubs hurt most due to injuries in the previous campaign too. If they keep their top stars free from problems, they won’t need another creative force in the team.
