Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton: Who Has The Stronger Squad On Paper Ahead Of The New Season?

Ronald Koeman is busy making sure that his Everton side can compete with the best teams in the country next season. They are trying hard to replace the departed Romelu Lukaku and have made some decent signings. But still, they need some additions to make sure that they can challenge for a spot in Europe next season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur are at the other end of the spectrum and are looking to make sure that they are adequately armed for the challenges next season. Both teams have a decent core but how do they compare with the amount of depth in the squad? Here is a small analysis of the strength and depth of both the squads:

First Team

Jordan Pickford and Hugo Lloris are expected to be the first choice shot stoppers for their respective clubs. The Merseyside outfit are expected to use newbie Michael Keane and veteran Ashley Williams as the first choice centre-back pair next season. They will take time to adjust to the conditions and will surely be less comforting than a backline of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen for Spurs.

Pochettino has lost Kyle Walker to Manchester City and might use Kieran Trippier in this role in the first team next season while Danny Rose should keep his place at left back. Everton are expected to use Mason Holgate and Leighton Baines on the flanks at the back.

Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin are expected to start in the midfield for Everton while Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama are expected to play in this role for Spurs. Both pairs have a decent balance to show for.

Everton have signed Sandro Ramirez and Davy Klaassen, and are expected to start them alongside Kevin Mirallas on the wings. Ross Barkley is not expected to stay beyond the summer and Koeman will be looking to find a natural replacement.

Spurs have Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli occupying three of the four places in the attack. Heung-Min Son could yet keep his place on the wings but Pochettino might look to add another star to make sure that they are adequately armed.

Squad Depth

Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori are the only backups at centre-back for Everton while Eric Dier, who is linked with an exit and Kevin Wimmer, also linked with an exit, are the options for Spurs at the back. Trippier needs a backup as Walker has left, while Ben Davies will act as one for Rose on the other flank.

Wayne Rooney

Everton will hope that Seamus Coleman comes back strongly, midway through the season, and Holgate will drop to the bench at that time. There are hardly any top class backups at right back spot for Everton.

Tom Davies, Gareth Barry, James McCarty (linked with an exit) and Muhamed Besic are all options from the bench for the two positions in the midfield for Everton. For Spurs, Harry Winks holds the only place on the bench for the midfield positions, with Eric Dier also an option, making Everton slightly stronger in this position.

While Eric Lamela, Moussa Sissoko (linked with an exit), Vincent Janssen and Kevin N’Koudou are all options in the attack for Spurs, none of them are top class. Everton, on the other hand, have the likes of Yannick Bolasie, Aaron Lennon, Ademola Lookman and Wayne Rooney to call upon, which is not too strong either.

On the whole, Tottenham have more quality in their first team and also have better players on the bench than Everton, despite the lack of numbers.

So it is Tottenham’s, whose squad is better than that of Everton.
