Top 5 Low Budget Defenders Manchester United And Arsenal Should Look To Sign This Transfer Window

Share

With the new Premier League season not even a month away, all the teams are busy getting in the transfers they need to be ready for the grueling season ahead. While both Manchester United and Arsenal have gotten some key signings already (Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy) the lack of depth in both team’s defence is really noticeable. With both teams looking at potential defensive signings to best cover their positions in the starting eleven (Hummels and Vermaelen for Manchester United), the main challenge lies in getting the cheap signings done who can be the potential cover for the long season ahead. Here at Soccersouls we take a look at the top 5 low budget defenders Manchester United and Arsenal can look to get.

1. Ron Vlaar:

The Aston Villa captain had a fantastic World Cup and will be more than comfortable with Louis Van Gaal’s tactics given how he was managed by the Manchester United manager at Brazil. Given how the temptation of playing for a big club can force Aston Villa to sell him for cheap this is an option Manchester United can always go for. Also Arsenal are looking for an experienced defender to play as back up to Koscielny and Mertesacker and they can do a lot worse than Ron Vlaar.

2. Micah Richards:

The Manchester City man is currently out of favour at the home of the current champions but there is no doubting the talent he has. Micah Richards has all the required attributes like pace, Physical strength and defending skills. If either of Manchester United or Arsenal take a chance on him they can have a very capable back up defender for cheap while always having the chance of Micah Richards finally fulfilling his potential.

3. Ashley Williams:

Ashley Williams

The Swansea City centre half might prove to be an unpopular choice at Manchester United given how his clearance hit Robin Van Persie’s head which led to Sir Alex Ferguson claiming that the Dutchman could even have been killed by that ball. However if chosen by either of Arsenal and Manchester United he will give plenty of versatility to the defence as well as his composure and clean tackling a huge bonus to either of the two sides. Who ever signs him definitely benefit from Dutchman’s valuable premier league experience.

4. Geoff Cameron:

This signing is not really applicable to Arsenal as Manchester United is in more need for a decent full back. With Rafael the main right back at Manchester United next season, Louis Van Gaal can bring this USA international to give some much needed competition to the young Brazilian full back. The best part is that he will be a cheap alternative who will unlikely burn much of a hole in Manchester United’s finances.

5. De Vrij:

The Feyernoord defender is unlikely to be expensive even after having impressed in the World Cup. He can be the perfect back up for both Manchester United and Arsenal. Not a very big name, De Vrij will do his job quietly and professionally and his tackling will be an asset if either of these teams actually make the move to get this Dutch defender. He is an all-round defender with good tackling, heading and intercepting skills.
