Time To Clean Up: 3 Arsenal Players Who Are Surplus To The Requirement

Share

Arsenal fans were frustrated for one more year after their team failed to win the title, as they finished runner ups to the eventual Champions Leicester City. The Gunners capitulated under the pressure, even though all the other big clubs struggled for consistency all season long. Arsenal have already brought in Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka earlier in the summer but there is heavy speculation amongst the Arsenal fans about who Wenger might bring in the coming 2 months.

The most urgent requirement is a world class striker, who can support Giroud upfront and give the team something different in terms of their playing style. It’s important to remember that there are limitations on squad size in both the Champions League and Premier League. In order to bring in new faces, Arsene Wenger will have to let some players go. Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini have already been released by the club after their contract ended this year. Here is the list of 3 more players who can leave the Gunners this summer.

Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott is the longest serving Gunner currently, he has spent more than a decade under the stewardship of Arsene Wenger. He was touted to be one of the bright stars for both club and country but it’s fair to say that he has never hit the heights that was expected from it. He had a disappointing last season, which resulted in him being not selected for England’s EURO 2016 squad by Roy Hodgson. He has not be a regular in Wenger’s team either and at this point his future looks bleak at Emirates, therefore a change of scenery might be in order.

Mathieu Debuchy

French full-back Mathieu Debuchy appears almost certain to leave the club this summer. Debuchy arrived at Arsenal with much fan fare but he has struggled to get into the team due to injuries and bad form. He was so out of favour last season that he was allowed to join Bordeaux on loan in January. With Hector Bellerin now clearly the first choice at full-back, and Carl Jenkinson back from his loan spell at West Ham, there is no need to retain Debuchy in the squad. Chambers can also deputize at right-back if necessary.

Yaya Sanogo

Sanogo career at Arsenal has been filled with disappointments and regrets. Last season was particularly bad for Sanogo, as he was first sent on loan to Ajax in the Eredivisie, where he played just 47 minutes in the six months before the loan deal was cut short. When he arrived at Arsenal, he was widely regarded as a young striker of considerable promise. However he will soon be 24 and there is no evidence of him fulfilling that potential.
