Three Reasons Why Arsenal Should Sell Their Longest Serving Player This Summer

Arsenal have the money to buy some high quality players in the summer transfer window in order to improve their current squad, with Arsene Wenger looking to win some major titles in the upcoming days. The French manager’s side ended yet another trophyless season and the fans were now getting frustrated with the results. The only positive out of the whole season might have been the fact that the Gunners finished the campaign in second place in the Premier League table over north London rivals Tottenham.

However, there is a quick need for change and the club is now looking to sign a number of highly talented players, who can help them take the team to new heights. With new stars coming in some of the already existing players in the squad might not be happy and could possibly leave or could be sold by Wenger.

England international Theo Walcott is one such player, who was dropped from the England national side for the Euro 2016 tournament. The attacker who spent a lot of time on the bench due to injuries and poor form, was neglected by manger Roy Hodgson.

Also. the Londoners also do not need really his services and the player was linked with a move to Anfield some time ago, as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to add him to his current Liverpool side.

Here are my three main reasons why the 27 year old forward should be sold this summer:

3. Past his prime:

Though Walcott might still possibly have 4-5 good years to give to Arsenal or any other club that he joins, the play has lost his charm. He is not that player anymore who would carry the ball halfway across the pitch with enough pace to leave the opponents chasing him, in quick counter-attacking moves and then finish the chance off like a true champion. His finishing is still quite good, yet that awareness and energy level has dropped substantially. The lack of regular first team football might have effected his overall game, though it is clear that he is not going to be picked to lead the front-line, over team-mate Olivier Giroud any time soon.

2. Injury prone:

The England international has been injured for long spells of time in recent seasons, which has cost us and missed the 2014 World Cup as well due to a surgery that he had. Further, Walcott has also been injured at crucial times during the past couple of seasons, and was dropped by manager Roy Hodgson for the Euros in France, as well. It seems blaming injuries for everything has become some sort of a trend now at Arsenal, which we need to move on from. We need to stop making excuses for our inability to win titles as we have the funds to spend on more players and it is better that we rely on more physically fit stars, rather than a player like the former Southampton star.

1. Too many superior and young options:

Arsenal have too many options in their current squad, which means Wenger can deploy some of those players instead of using a rusty Walcott. A player like Alex Iwobi is a much better option when it comes to the playing on the right wing, or even Aaron Ramsey for that matter. Jack Wilshere should be back in the side as well, though he does not approve of playing on the sides. In a striker’s role, even if Giroud goes missing, Danny Welbeck is one option, though the Englishman is injured for the first half of the upcoming campaign. Alex Oxlade Chamberlain is also one more youngster, who might be preferred over Walcott due to his physical presence and ability to carry the ball forward. Last but not the least is Wenger’s most underused star, Joel Campbell, who deserves a lot more, but won’t get what he deserves at Arsenal at least.
