Tottenham fought hard for a 2-2 draw with Manchester City this weekend and suffice to say, the Londoners put up a strong fight with whatever they had.
Momentum plays a key role in most title races. One area that they looked weak in was the right-back department.
Spurs, under Pochettino, have always emphasized on attacking with the full-backs with Kyle Walker in the past and Kieran Trippier more recently.
One could sense that Trippier’s lack of creativity is a problem and Kyle Walker-Peters doesn’t offer the attacking instincts or the defensive soundness that’s required of a full-back in a system that depends heavily on them.
One player that Spurs were linked with and would have provided a lot more balance was Elseid Hysaj of Napoli. The 25-year-old is heading into his prime and the Albanian international, who was fantastic for Napoli under Maurizio Sarri would’ve been a fantastic option for them.
He’s very sound defensively and was afforded the room to move forward under Maurizio Sarri, even though he was the less adventurous full-back. He made 35 appearances last season and registered two assists but is likely to improve that in a side with as much attacking intent as Spurs.
Kyle Walker wasn’t as dangerous a full-back before Mauricio Pochettino helped him realize his abilities at a similar age and the same can be said of Kieran Trippier, who got his big break far later. Spurs might end up regretting not signing a right-back as there’s not a lot to suggest that Kyle Walker-Peters can be that player for them.
