Why Arsenal should offload Mohamed Elneny

When Arsenal started their campaign against Newcastle United last Sunday, one of the most surprising things to notice was the number of options they had on the bench.

Alexandre Lacazette, Dan Ceballos, Nicolas Pepe and David Luiz were all on the bench and they weren’t really needed as Arsenal managed a mostly comfortable 1-0 victory over the Magpies.

Arsenal were one of the busiest sides in the summer transfer window and have got rid of a couple of players as well and with the European transfer deadline still a few days from close, they could still get rid of a few players who won’t be making most matchday squads.

One such player is Mohamed Elneny, who has been linked with a move to Turkish side Galatasaray according to a report in Football.London.

Elneny was among a group of signings under the former regime that underwhelmed and it’s fairly clear that with new directors and a new manager, Arsenal are looking to become a European giant once again.

Mohamed Elneny

Elneny is a holding midfielder, who keeps it very tidy in the midfield and does a decent job defensively in the middle of the park. He’s an Egyptian international and has made 46 appearances for the Gunners since his move in 2016. It’s best for him that he starts getting more game time as he simply hasn’t cut it out in the Premier League.

His positions have been taken up by Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira in the heart of midfield and there’s also the space taken up by Dani Ceballos, which is why it’s best if the spots on the bench and the cup competitions are taken up by the players from the academy.

Elneny will simply be hindering their development and he’s heading into his prime at 27. He will be taking minutes off of the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock, which is why he should be offloaded before the window ends.

Unai Emery

Arsenal will be starting the weekend’s fixtures against Burnley in the first home game of the season. They’ll be hoping that they can give the fans something to cheer about as the new signings are likely to start.

Conclusion

Unai Emery will be under more pressure this season than in his first season in charge as he’s been backed with a whole host of players in positions that were a problem for Arsenal in previous seasons.
