Why Southampton have done a good job by signing Kevin Danso on loan

According to a report from the BBC, Southampton confirmed the season-long loan signing of young defender Kevin Danso from Augsburg, a day after the transfer window closed for Premier League sides.

The 20-year-old has now been confirmed as Southampton’s third and final new recruit of the close-season window following the arrivals of Che Adams and Moussa Djenepo.

The Austrian Under-21 international moved to England at the age of six and came through MK Dons’ academy system prior to joining Augsburg in 2014. He made his Bundesliga debut in March 2017 and went on to represent the German side 45 times.

Southampton just survived relegation last season and it remains to be seen whether Ralph Hasenhuttl can oversee a huge change this season, despite not enjoying the busiest of transfer windows.

It is quite clear that Hasenhuttl is trying to build a completely new-look Southampton side and new recruits Adams and Djenepo will be expected to make an instant impact in the 2019/20 campaign.

After leaking 65 goals in the league last season, it was very crucial for the Saints to reinforce their backline. But they didn’t put much emphasis on the defence and instead, signed a 20-year-old defender on loan from Augsburg. It is a pure gamble taken by Hasenhuttl and co. but chances of it paying off are high.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Kevin Danso is a towering presence at the back. He is strong, powerful and an intimidating defender with a good turn of pace to go with his frame.

The Australian Under-21 international of Ghanaian descent is a formidable force in the air and on the ground, adept at playing out from the back. A consistent and reliable presence with the ball at his feet, the 20-year-old also makes crucial tackles and interceptions for his team.

Danso’s technical abilities on the ball, anticipation, supreme aerial ability and good game-reading skills do stand out, as does his composure, agility and ability to anticipate the danger and clear his lines, making him a perfect fit for Hasenhuttl’s philosophy at St. Mary’s.
