Simply Not Good Enough – Why Chelsea Should Avoid Completing This Contract Extension

Every single time a new manager arrives in a team, major changes are bound to happen both on and off the field, and Antonio Conte’s Chelsea aren’t the exception to this rule, as some new faces have thrived under the Italian’s command, and majorly due to that, other players are being left behind in this interesting and promising project.

Some players that could be on their way out of West London are midfielders Oscar and Cesc Fabregas, and veteran defenders John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic, as Conte has been very emphatic and clear about what he wants for the team and that those players aren’t on his current plans.

However, the Serbian veteran Branislav Ivanovic is keen to extend his stay at Chelsea, as he refuses to give up on a very successful career at Stamford Bridge, where he arrived in 2008 and where he became one of the club’s biggest icons.

Ivanovic has won several trophies with Chelsea, including a couple of Premier Leagues, one UEFA Europa League and a UEFA Champions League, making over 350 appearances and scored 33 goals as a blue.

However, Branislav has performed really poorly in the past couple of seasons, and he’s about to turn 33 in a couple of months, so Chelsea needs to put a lot of thought into his situation and ask themselves if extending his contract is actually a good move.

We all know this thing is a business and clubs often look to get the most out of their players before letting them go without hesitating, no matter how much they’ve given to the club or what do the fans think about those moves, and we don’t expect things to be very different with Ivanovic this time.

The Serbian’s contract expires in the next summer, and even if he wants to stay and retire at Stamford Bridge, the wisest thing to do for both parties would be to terminate this relationship and let the veteran defender walk away in order to bring his career back from the ashes.

Ivanovic won’t get any playing time under Conte and you know he’s not going anywhere in the foreseeable future, as the Italian boss has really turned things around in the West London, and Chelsea are currently sitting at the second position on the Premier League table.

That 3 centre back scheme that Conte uses for his teams just doesn’t fit with Ivanovic’s features, and newcomer Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses have thrived playing as full backs for this renewed Chelsea team.

On top of that, Chelsea’s currently focused on the Premier League, as they’re not disputing any continental tournament, so Ivanovic won’t get many opportunities to play on the less important competitions either.

It’s kind of sad when this kind of things happen, but this world is ruled by youngsters, and there’s no room for aging veterans anymore, so Roman Abramovich shouldn’t grant Ivanovic’s wish and should just show him the way out of Stamford Bridge and thank him for his great services through all these years.
