Simply Not Good Enough – Three Players Liverpool Should Sell In The Summer

Share

The Reds are one of the favourites for the top 4 finishing spots in the English Premier League, and it’s even believed by a few that they can still challenge for the league’s top prize despite finding themselves 13 points behind leaders Chelsea, after 24 rounds of fixtures.

Whatever happens at the end of 2016-17, Liverpool needs to prune down their current squad in order to land more quality additions fitting their style as they attempt to compete solidly on all fronts in 2017-18.

To do that, here are 3 players Liverpool should sell come summer.

Alberto Moreno

The Spaniard fell out of favour with Klopp at the beginning of the season following some below-par performances, and since Milner took his place, he has remained largely on the bench.

Moreno has made 2 starts and 6 others off the bench, and while he has played most of the cup games, he hasn’t impressed the manager enough, and there is a feeling the newly returned Joe Gomez will be more involved in first team football than him next season.

The former Sevilla fullback should be sold come summer as he clearly doesn’t have enough quality to perform up to the required expectations under Klopp, and he sure would command around or even more than the £12million the Reds secured his services with back in the summer of 2014.

Daniel Sturridge

On his day, he is regarded as one of the best strikers in the league, and his CV speaks volume. However, he isn’t suitable for the new system at Liverpool, and it isn’t expected he remains at Anfield further than this season as he is now Klopp’s 3rd choice striker.

Sturridge has the quality to walk straight into many top teams’ starting XI in the Premier League, but he clearly can’t displace a makeshift Firmino from the number 9 position or even Origi from the pecking order off the bench.

Both parties are better off parting ways at the end of the season, as Liverpool can make quite a “fortune” from the sales of an unhappy player who still has a lot in him but isn’t just finding the needed playing minutes to fully express his striking abilities.

Liverpool selling Sturridge and him willing to seek greener pastures elsewhere should definitely be one of the club’s and player’s summer plans, as both aren’t able to offer the other any benefits any longer.

Lucas Leiva

This was a deal that was supposed to have happened a season earlier, as the Brazilian defensive midfielder is clearly past his prime as even a squad player.

The presence of the 30-year-old has hindered the development of the hugely talented Marko Grujic who is yet to make a Premier League start since arriving from Red Star Belgrade last summer.

Leiva is unarguably surplus to requirements, and his quality has shown he is no longer capable of playing at such a top level any longer.

His involvement in the most recent F.A and EFL Cups couldn’t inspire Liverpool to wins and it’s high time Klopp let him go in order to give the budding youngsters in the squad a chance to grow.
