The signing of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera means that Manchester United have already signed more players than they did last summer, when many predicted that they needed a massive overhaul if they were stay at or near the top. Those two signings have given the fans some much needed hope, ahead of a season in which the club will be hoping to get back to where they rightfully belong.

Although the two signings are just what the doctor ordered for the Red Devils, they certainly need plenty more of where that came from, if there are to stand a chance of competing for the League next season. There are still plenty of gaps to fill in the squad and it remains to be seen if Van Gaal can fill them all up before the start of the Premier League campaign.

Considering what Manchester United need and the positions that need strengthening, here are three key players that considerably improve the squad and make it one capable of winning the League. These three plans would be the final three pieces in the jigsaw and would certainly be enough to get the Red Devils not just into the top four, but with a fighting chance of winning the League as well.

Mats Hummels

The 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund centre back has been one of Germany’s key assets in Brazil. His all-round performance against France in the Quarter-final showed just why Hummels is regarded as one of the finest centre backs in the world at the moment. An excellent reader of the game, who times his tackles and interceptions to perfection, Hummels combines force and finesse to such great effect.

With the departure of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, the club is in dire need of an experienced centre back to marshal the defence and Hummels would be a perfect choice to do just that. Although the centre back has claimed that he is happy at Dortmund, if Manchester United can agree a fee with the club, then the defender would be open to the move. Van Gaal is a keen admirer of the centre back, who started his career at Bayern Munich when the Dutchman was the manager and that might just prove to be enough to bring him to Manchester.

Arturo Vidal

Although United have already signed a central midfielder in Ander Herrera, they still lack a natural leader in midfield. A player, who is physical, can break up the play and can also bring the ball out from the back effectively, someone who can, not just stifle the opposition, but also get forward and provide the telling pass or goal to seal the game.

So it is no surprise to see the club sniffing at Juve’s Arturo Vidal, the Chilean midfielder who ticks all of those boxes. Ever since move to the club in 2011, the Chilean has become one of the mainstays of the side and has developed into one of the most complete midfielders in the world. With Juventus unlikely to sell their star-man, United might have to break the bank to get him. Also, the fact that Juventus are keen on Nani and Evra might just sweeten the deal and help the Red Devils secure the Chilean who will finally add some steel to United’s central midfield.

Ángel di María

With Real Madrid reportedly interested in securing the signature of Colombian World Cup sensation James Rodriguez from AS Monaco and Ángel di María reportedly wanting out of the club, the time might be ripe for Manchester United to sign the Argentine winger who has been scouted by the club in the past. Quick, skilful and dangerous on the ball, the 26-year-old has been Argentina’s second-best creative outlet after Messi and is coming on the back of a stellar season with Los Blancos where helped seal the side’s 10th Champions League title.

Contracted to Real Madrid till 2018, it will take a considerable amount of cash, to bring the Spaniard to Manchester. However, with the club currently pursuing James Rodriguez, the 26-year-old might just be interested in a switch to Manchester. His speed, strength and versatility has put him on top of incoming United boss Louis Van Gaal’s wish list.
