According to a report from the Argus, Dutch Champions Ajax are discussing a bid to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Davy Propper in the summer.
The 27-year-old has been considered as a replacement for young sensation Frenkie de Jong, who will move to Barcelona in the summer.
Propper was a key member of Ajax’s arch-rivals PSV Eindhoven before he made the switch to the Amex back in the summer of 2017. A move to Amsterdam will irk a few PSV fans as they missed out on the title this season but it would be an even bigger blow to Brighton next season.
The Dutch international has been an integral part of Chris Hughton’s side since joining the club two seasons ago. His versatility in midfield has been pivotal to the Seagulls staying up for the second season in a row but his best is yet to come.
Propper’s abilities were hugely wasted in Hughton’s defensive system where although the Dutchman gave them enough steel in the middle of the park, his attacking prowess was extremely limited over the last two years.
Brighton can expect a whole new style of football next season at the Amex under Graham Potter. The former Swansea boss is tactically brilliant and his sides tend to be extremely effective in their attacks.
Propper could be the centrepiece to Potter’s system next season where he would be the perfect player to help out in the transition from defence to attack. Propper’s technical ability on the ball is quite fantastic and he is solid without the ball as well.
His positioning has been top-notch whenever he has played in a deeper role but he is more effective in a box-to-box role.
The emergence of Vyes Bissouma and Propper have the potential to form a brilliant midfield partnership for Brighton next season, especially if a dedicated defensive midfielder is used behind the duo.
Losing Propper at the stage of his career where he is reaching his peak would be a disastrous move for Brighton, especially with the exciting times ahead under Graham Potter.
