Frank Lampard’s Derby County side faced a heartbreaking loss to Aston Villa in the promotion playoff finals. The Rams fought valiantly to peg one back and reduce the deficit by a goal but it wasn’t to be for the Chelsea legend and his exciting side.
Lampard has had a fantastic outing despite last night’s result. The Rams finished in 6th place in the Championship last season as well but there were a few memorable results during the campaign.
The penalty shootout win at Old Trafford in the Carabao cup was a definite highlight for the Rams. They also had a great showing against Lampard’s former team Chelsea in the same competition despite the loss.
Current Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has had a topsy-turvy season, having gone undefeated for a long period but also suffering a poor run of form that saw them lose 6-0 at the Etihad to eventual champions Manchester City.
The former Napoli manager has been linked with the Juventus job after Massimiliano Allegri parted ways with the Old Lady after 4 successful years. Sarri, however, has won many new fans after winning the Europa League with Chelsea, having dismantled Arenal 4-1 in Baku.
Lampard has, on the other hand, been seen as a replacement if the Italian were to leave. The probability to take up the job would’ve have been greater had Derby made it to the Premier League but there will be doubts about Lampard’s credibility after suffering the defeat to Villa.
It would be a romantic appointment at this time as Lampard is still learning as a manager and he should continue to develop as a manager at Derby before he can take the big job.
Sarri despite his critics has finished with a respectable 3rd place and made it to 2 cup finals, winning one.
One should keep in mind that this was the case despite not having a pre-season. Sarri is definitely a top manager and Chelsea should give him more time to build a team entirely in his image.
