Manchester United have been looking to solve their centre back issues this season, they have been on the lookout for a top class central defender, well that search still goes on but United have made another signing as they completed the paperwork for the 16-year-old Dayot Upamecano from Valenciennes in France.
The 16-year-old was to sign earlier for the Premier League giants but last minute paperwork scuppered the deal, the centre back was touted and followed by a whole host of clubs like Arsenal, Monaco and PSG but he chose to sign with United to continue his growth and learning phase as he tries to get better.
He has made appearances for the France U16 and U17 teams and can play on either side of central defence. He hasn’t played in the first team for Valenciennes yet but his ability does seem to make him hot property since a lot of the top clubs were looking to sign him before he inked a deal with Manchester United.
When the youngster does join the United squad he would probably stay at the academy for a couple of years before he is sent out on loan like the case for most of the young players who join big clubs. Manchester United have been in desperate need of some youngsters to come out of their academy and the last real player coming out and doing well might have been Adnan Januzaj or Danny Welbeck and both don’t seem to have done a lot at United with Welbeck being sold and Januzaj frozen out from the team.
What United will be hoping is that Upamecano grows up and learns a lot from the coaches and staff at the club, the likes of Blackett and McNair do show that United and Louis Van Gaal will provide chances to those who deserves it and Dayot will be hoping that he gets his chance sooner rather than later. However, Dayot still has a lot of to learn before he can even think of getting into the reserve team at United. He might have the build like a central defender but he still needs to bulk up a bit before he can be considered as a real and proper defender who can step up in the Premier League, what United have is an investment who could come good in the future but the only thing we can do about Dayot is speculate how good he could be in the future.
