Time may be out for the Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina at Arsenal, the 27-year-old hasn’t featured for the Gunners all season and although he was tipped to start in the FA Cup against Sunderland, he couldn’t start due to an injury for the former number one.
Petr Cech is the established number one at Arsenal and taking the gloves from him might not be easy for Ospina, who has made a few mistakes during his career at London. Cech probably would stay as the goalkeeper for the first team for a couple of seasons before moving on and frankly speaking Ospina does not have a chance to take the position over from the former Chelsea stopper.
With Arsene constantly having to refresh the squad with new recruits, he could well do with a new backup goalkeeper, someone who can learn and grow in the team while coming on and providing a decent display. A young goalkeeper might do the trick seeing that Cech is pretty close to the end of his career once his contract does run out.
Here are three replacements for Ospina who would be ideal if they make the move to Arsenal and take over from Cech.
Atletico Madrid have a great recent history when it comes to two positions, forwards and goalkeepers. Falcao, Torres, Costa and Aguero are some of the forwards that have light up La Liga and now they have a set of goalkeepers doing the same. Thibaut Courtois grew at the Madrid side; they also had David de Gea and now have a youngster Jan Oblak who seems to be getting better as each game goes.
The 23-year-old might not be the player that many would want to come to Arsenal, having relatively little exposure to big games but the Slovenian has become one of the best goalkeepers in the league and maybe a couple of years down the line, he could be the one who takes over from Cech. The only downside would be the fact that he isn’t as commanding in the box as the 33-year-old Cech.
Once considered the best German goalkeeper, there are a number of top class goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, Adler has seen his stock rise and fall, from being the best in Leverkusen. He has now been fighting it out at Hamburg and a move away from the club could do him some good as well.
The 30-year-old isn’t the youngest goalkeeper in the world but he does have a lot of experience and that could well be the clinching deal for Arsenal. Adler wouldn’t mind staying on the bench for a few games and he could well pick up from Cech once the Arsenal goalkeeper does decide to retire from the game.
A player who has experienced English conditions before. Zieler was a Manchester United product that slipped out of Fergie’s hands and has grown to become one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga. Zieler even was part of the team that lifted the 2014 World Cup.
Assured in the box and someone who has bags of experience, the 26-year-old would be a great replacement to have in the team and someone who would become even better than he is at the moment. Would he be willing to move from Hannover? That would be a test of Arsene and Arsenal’s resolve but if they can get the German international, it would certainly give Cech better competition.
