Raheem Sterling sees the funny side after VAR rules his goal offside against Chelsea

Raheem Sterling saw the funny side of things after his effort was ruled out for offside by VAR

Manchester City speedster Rahim Starling took a sarcastic dig at the much-debated VAR rule after his goal against Chelsea last night was ruled offside.

The curse of VAR continued to linger for the England international who once again fell victim to this new rule.

During last night’s fixture, Sterling looked to have sealed the win for the Cityzens with a strike in injury time.

However, with the intervention of VAR, the goal was ruled out since Sterling was in a more advanced position than Kurt Zouma.

Despite that, Manchester City held on to their 2-1 lead and get all the three points.

In the aftermath of the match, Raheem Sterling took to Twitter to joke about the VAR curse. He tweeted saying, “Happy to improve my VAR overruled goals record today again, damn this thing gonna kill me bro’ ‘#cursed”.

However, the effort against Chelsea isn’t the first time Sterling had a goal chalked off by video technology.

Previously, during City’s opening league fixture this season against West Ham, Sterling suffered a similar fate. One of the winger’s efforts was disallowed in their 5-0 win.

Worse luck came when Sterling found the net during the Champions League semi-final tie against Tottenham last season but VAR disallowed it.

City eventually went on to lose the tie on away goals after an aggregate result of 4-4.

Match Details

Following Liverpool’s and Leicester’s victories on Saturday, all eyes were on City as they hosted Chelsea in a high-octane clash

Both teams were on the prowl for a win to keep in tandem with runaway leaders Liverpool, who secured a late win against Crystal Palace.

Right from the start, the teams went on an attacking spree which set the tone for the marquee fixture. But it was Chelsea who drew first blood through N’Golo Kante.

Just when the Blues were starting to look comfortable, Kevin de Bruyne brought City back on level terms after his effort was deflected in off Kurt Zouma.

Eight minutes later, City were ahead, courtesy Riyad Mahrez’s stunner. The Algerian cut in from the right and fired low to beat Kepa in the far corner.

Though the second-half was less frantic, it was sheer domination from the home team. City created numerous opportunities to put the game beyond Frank Lampard’s side but failed to make them count.
