Predicted Manchester United Line Up If They End Up Signing This Uruguayan Defender

Share

Jose Mourinho is running out of excuses, so he’s looking for new players instead to see if he finally can fix the disaster he’s made at Manchester United, and he’s set to show the exit to several guys as well during this upcoming transfer window.

One of the sectors of the field that the Portuguese manager is eager to overhaul is Manchester United’s defence, as he’s pointed the finger at Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw for most of the season, and he doesn’t sound too pleased with Marcos Rojo or Matteo Darmian either.

So, Mourinho would be looking to break the market in order to bring a couple of defenders to Old Trafford, and Manchester United are reportedly very interested in Atletico de Madrid’s outcast Jose Maria Gimenez, as the Uruguayan hasn’t been constantly featured on Diego Simeone’s starting XI despite being set to be the new Diego Godin.

Gimenez is a very talented defender with a great feel for the game, but he’s been relegated to a bench role with Stefan Savic featuring as Simeone’s other centre back, so the youngster is looking for a way out of the Vicente Calderon and Mourinho’s offering a new home and he could be easily tempted. But, how would Manchester United line up if they wind up signing “Chema”? Let’s wonder

Everything remains the same

Mourinho doesn’t enjoy changing his scheme and his lack of creativity has cost him a lot over the past few seasons. Considering he’s more of a traditional coach, you could think he won’t change much whenever (if) Jose Gimenez arrives at Old Trafford.

Having said that, he’d continue to roll with his four men defence, featuring Antonio Valencia at Right Back, Luke Shaw or Matteo Darmian on the left, Eric Bailly (whenever he returns from his injury) and Gimenez to complete his defensive side.

Three at the back, two full backs up front

The Portuguese boss could take a look at Antonio Conte’s style and it would make a lot of sense considering the personnel Manchester United has on his roster right now, as it could improve their current level.

Mourinho could opt for a three men defence featuring Eric Bailly on the right, Chema Gimenez on the centre of the defence and Daley Blind or Smalling on the left, to go along with two forwarded full backs such as Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw / Ashley Young to play more like Chelsea does with Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta with Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso in front of them.

This could be a great idea for Mourinho, as it could help ease the offensive pressure off Manchester United wingers and create more space for the offence to flow.

Jose Maria Gimenez’s future remains uncertain, as Simeone’s keen to keep him for the long run, but he’s extremely talented to keep on the bench and he needs more minutes to keep developing his game, and he could be the defensive anchor Jose Mourinho’s looking for his struggling side.
