The end of an era is almost here, Petr Cech’s Chelsea career is almost over. Despite still being only 33-years-old and being in his prime, the Czech goalkeeper will move from the Stamford Bridge club after more than a decade in the blue of Chelsea. Cech would be moving to another Premier League club, most probably Arsenal in search of more regular football, after being replaced at Chelsea for Thibaut Courtois.
With Cech leaving, Chelsea would require a decent backup to Courtois, someone who would not mind sitting on the bench but can still step up in the chances provided to him. Chelsea have always done well in the transfer window and we single out three goalkeepers who would be ideal as an understudy for Courtois this season.
1. Robert Green
The 35-year-old couldn’t keep a rather poor QPR side in the Premier League last season and was relegated to the Championship but he was one of the few players who gave it all for the club, every game. Green, a former England international has fallen out of favour in the national setup since the 2014 world cup but he is still good in most games.
QPR wouldn’t be able to hold onto the goalkeeper if Chelsea make a serious move for him and he wouldn’t be very expensive either. Green would be a great choice as a second goalkeeper for Chelsea and is a proven Premier League player.
2. John Ruddy
While one England goalkeeper went down to the Championship, another one rose, John Ruddy helped Norwich City reclaim promotion and will be playing in the Premier League this season. He was linked with a move to Chelsea back in 2013 but opted to stay with the Canaries to give him a chance of starting in England’s World Cup games.
Fast forward a couple of years, and he wouldn’t mind a move to Chelsea this time around, he wouldn’t get a lot of chances to start but he would be playing for one of the best clubs in the world, that should be enough, shouldn’t it?
3. Asmir Begovic
Rumours are that Chelsea want to sign the Stoke City goalkeeper as a replacement for Cech, the 27-year-old might not want to play as a second fiddle to Courtois, especially in the prime of his career but the chance to play for Chelsea could be something that Asmir would not like to let go. He does have a lot to offer when compared to the other goalkeepers on the list.
The big question is how well will he fit into this Chelsea side, especially when he is on the bench. One thing is a certainty, Begovic would push Courtois all the way for the number one spot as Chelsea’s goalkeeper and that would be fascinating to see next season.
