Only 3 Arsenal Stars Make It, 7 From Chelsea: London Dream XI For The 2013-14 EPL Season

Share

Chelsea’s shocking defeat at the hands of Sunderland last night could effectively mean the end of the London challenge in the race for the Premier League crown. With Arsenal fighting  Everton for the final Champions League spot, and Spurs trying to seal their ticket to Europe, it has been a contrasting campaign of sorts for the elite London clubs.

Let’s take a look at the London Dream XI for the 2013-14 season. Has your favourite player made the cut? Read on to find out.

Goalkeeper

Petr Cech

Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny and Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris have often been let down by their defence’s ineptitude. Petr Cech has been in terrific form in the Chelsea goal and rightfully earns his spot in our ‘London Dream XI’ for the 2013-14 season.

Defence

RB – Branislav Ivanovic
CB – Laurent Koscielny
CB – John Terry
LB – Cesar Azpilicueta

Branislav Ivanovic has been the epitome of consistency at right back for Chelsea. It is Ivanovic’s consistency coupled with his versatility that makes him such a vital cog in Jose Mourinho’s system. From a defensive standpoint, the Serbian’s physicality and ability in the air makes him a force to reckon with, while he has given Chelsea a different dimension going forward with his smartly timed runs.

Laurent Koscielny was an error waiting to happen in his first season at Arsenal, but the Frenchman has produced consistent displays in the last three seasons, and is widely recognised as one of the top central defenders in the world at the moment.

John Terry has been enjoying his best season in a Chelsea shirt for a few years under the management of Jose Mourinho. Chelsea have the tightest defence in the league this season and Terry has been ever present at the back.

Cesar Azpilicueta was asked to switch to left back from his favoured right back position, and the Spanish international has been in supreme form this season and has sealed his spot in the Chelsea lineup.

CDM – Matic
CDM – Aaron Ramsey
RAM – Christian Eriksen
LAM – Eden Hazard
CAM – Oscar

Although, Matic came in the mid point of the season, the Serbian has quickly turned himself as the main man for Mourinho’s double pivot. Having left Chelsea as an youngster, in a swap deal, to come back to the same club and get yourself on the team sheet for almost all of the matches is not an easy job. The Serbian lends a defensive stability in his holding role and attacking fluidity with his passing and intelligent movement.

Aaron Ramsey has enjoyed a coming-of-age season at Arsenal this year. 10 goals and 8 assists from his deep-lying midfield role propelled Arsenal to the top of the table before Ramsey endured a spell on the sidelines with injury. His link-up play with Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil will be a treat to watch next season.

Christian Eriksen has proven to be a bargain buy if ever there was one. In 20 appearances for Spurs in the league, Eriksen has chipped in with 7 goals and 8 assists, including the winner at Old Trafford at the turn of the year.

Eden Hazard’s impressive 14 goals in the League is more than any of the three Chelsea strikers have managed this season. The Belgian has got the ball rolling in his second season at the Bridge and promises to be a top-level performer for years to come.

Oscar’s high-flying start to the campaign has been followed by a mediocre patch, but the Brazilian playmaker continues to remain an important asset in Jose Mourinho’s system. With Mesut Ozil enjoying an indifferent season, Oscar just about gets the nod.

Striker

ST – Olivier Giroud

The Frenchman has scored 14 goals in the league this season, but has come under criticism for failing to add that much-needed consistency to his game. Giroud has often been criticised for going missing in the big games, but has enjoyed a far more prolific season than his first season in England.
