Norwich City Opinion: Canaries should sign Reece McAlear

According to Eastern Daily Press, Premier League newcomers Norwich City are closing in on yet another promising young talent, with the report claiming that the Canaries have now set their sights on Motherwell prodigy Reece McAlear. 

This is not the first time this summer that Norwich have been linked with a Motherwell player, though, with the Eastern Daily Press suggesting that the Canaries had failed in their pursuit of David Turnbull earlier in the transfer window. 

The same report claims that 17-year-old Reece McAlear is held in high regard by the youth coaches at the Motherwell academy and the teenager would initially link up with the U23 side if a move to Carrow Road does materialize. 

McAlear was also linked with moves to West Ham and Leicester City earlier in the summer but Eastern Daily Press understands that Norwich City are now the frontrunners in the race to snap up the teenage sensation, who has only 12 months remaining on his current contract at Fir Park.

The Canaries are yet to spend big in the transfer window following their promotion to the Premier League, with Norwich completing bargain deals for a number of players like Josip Drmic, Patrick Roberts, Ralf Fahrmann and Sam Byram in a bid to add more quality and experience to their first-team.  

However, the club has conducted a thorough recruitment drive to improve the depth of their U23 development side, with several talents like Rocky Bushiri, Rob Nizet, Daniel Adshead, Aidan Fitzpatrick and Charlie Gilmour enriching David Wright’s reserve side.

And, as the story goes, Reece McAlear might be the latest addition to that list, as the Canaries continue their hunt for talented youngsters.

McAlear, who made his debut for Motherwell’s U20 at the tender age of 15, is yet to make a senior competitive appearance for his boyhood club, although he has earned rave reviews for his performances at the youth level. The Glasgow-born starlet has already represented Scotland at the U-17 level, earning 5 caps in the process. 

Well, not a lot is known about the 17-year-old’s style of play and other attributes, given that he is yet to make his senior professional debut or feature in the UEFA Youth League. However, it is definitely worth mentioning that McAlear is essentially a central midfielder by trade who is also capable of playing in a variety of positions in the middle of the park. 

To put things into perspective, Norwich seem to know that they would eventually need to polish a few gems of their own if they are to carve out an identity for themselves in the top-flight in the years to come.

The Canaries are trying to create a clear pathway from the academy to the first-team to ensure that there is no shortage of talent to propel the club to greater heights moving forward. 

Norwich apparently believe they have enough quality in their existing ranks to thrive in the Premier League without opting for a squad overhaul like Aston Villa, which is probably the reason why they are focussing more on bringing in burgeoning young talents to supplement their development side with more quality.

All in all, Norwich should go ahead with their interest in Reece McAlear as a part of their U23 recruitment drive, although it remains to be seen whether the 17-year-old is genuinely interested in pursuing a career south of the border.
