No Eriksen, no problem – Tottenham would strike gold by pursuing a January move for this diminutive 25-year-old instead

Why Tottenham should plot a January swoop for Ryan Fraser

Tottenham star Christian Eriksen has stayed at the club despite wanting a ‘new challenge’ amidst strong interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The Dane, 27, has started two of Tottenham’s four league games so far, coming off the bench for the other two as the Champions League finalists have made a stuttering start to the season.

Eriksen’s contract with Spurs is set to expire next June and although the club have offered him a deal that would make him their second-highest-paid player behind Harry Kane, he has no interest in extending his stay.

That could see Spurs sell the playmaker in January in order to get a transfer fee for him rather than losing him for free next summer.

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a potential Eriksen replacement in Giovani Lo Celso, but he’ll definitely need a new attacker if he decides to sell the Denmark international in the next transfer window.

In June, the Daily Star had claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing Bournemouth star, Ryan Fraser. While a move didn’t materialise in the summer transfer window, Pochettino would be wise to rekindle his interest in the Scotsman and sign him in January.

The diminutive Scotsman is out of contract next summer and Bournemouth could look to cash in to avoid losing him for free. He has rejected fresh terms last year and there are no plans for further extension talks as of now, meaning the 25-year-old could be available on a cut-price deal when the transfer window reopens.

Fraser’s rise from Scotland’s top-tier all the way to Premier League has been impressive and there’s no sign that he is about to stop. He impressed last year by scoring eight goals and making 15 assists for the Cherries in all competitions.

With better players at Spurs, the productivity would only rise. The Scottish international can play on either wing, in midfield or centrally as a no.10 or second striker.

In terms of his attributes, Fraser is a good dribbler of the ball and has the pace to burn in wide areas. He can pick out key passes in the final third and is a composed finisher in front of goal.

The ex-Aberdeen man is a really good crosser of the ball as well, which could help Spurs get more quality balls in the box for Harry Kane.

There is still room for improvement to his game as he is 25. Furthermore, Fraser is an absolute workhorse, which would fit in perfectly with Mauricio Pochettino’s system.

Verdict

Fraser was outstanding for Bournemouth the last term and would undoubtedly strengthen Tottenham’s squad. And if he can flourish adequately, the Scotsman could become a real asset for the north London outfit in the years to come.
