According to a report in French outlet L’Equipe, Premier League side Newcastle United have made a move to sign Lyon forward Martin Terrier. Manager Rafa Benitez has been taking a close look at the player for some time now and is interested in signing him at St.James’ Park.
However, as per the report, the Ligue 1 side have made it clear that their young star won’t be sold. Hence, the Magpies have put forward an offer to get the 21-year-old on a six-month loan deal, and they are hoping that this could be accepted.
Terrier has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring four goals. Most of his appearances come from the bench, as an impact player.
Here’s why Newcastle should sign the Frenchman, be it on a short-term deal:
Chiefly a left winger, Martin Terrier of leading the line and/or play as a support striker, behind the target man. He has the pace to make runs in behind and stretch the opposition defence, especially in counter-attacks. The 21-year-old always tries to link up with the striker and create goal-scoring chances.
If given space and time with the ball, the Frenchman does not shy away from shooting towards goal and test the goalkeeper’s handling. He also possesses the dribbling skills to get past defenders in tight areas around the final third. His versatility in playing several positions across the front line is something which is very helpful to the manager and the team.
Safe to say, Newcastle have struggled for goals this season, partly because of lack of support to their lone striker Salomon Rondon. We have seen in games where the Venezuelan gets isolated from his teammates, and counter-attacks break down due to wrong decisions at the wrong time with the ball.
As a result, the Magpies have only scored 19 goals from 23 games and should count themselves slightly lucky to be out of the danger currently. However, there is a need to add more quality to their forward line. Ayoze Perez has been scoring goals in the past few games. Similarly, someone like Terrier could be of great foil with Rondon.
The latter has all the propensities to contribute in a large way to help end this goal-scoring parched. If scoring three against Cardiff was a start, add the Frenchman to their squad and we could see Newcastle netting many more to eventually end the season staying up in the Premier League.
