In the end, Middlesbrough finished just one point behind the final playoff spot, with Derby County making it there. They finished their season with 73 points and the Rams finished with 74. It was an unfortunate end for manager Tony Pulis, who was immediately sacked at the end of the season.
The Boro board stated that getting or making the playoffs at the very least was the target and Pulis failed to do as much. But the former Stoke City and West Bromwich manager did a rather great job with the Riverside club, with their late season form letting the club down.
They were sitting pretty amongst the top-six sides for most of the season but things changed just after game-week 35. From there to their final game of the season, Middlesbrough managed just five wins. However, this includes a five game losing streak that saw Boro drop out of contention.
While they did eventually pick up form with three wins in a row, another loss simply made it too hard. Eventually, that losing streak changed the course of their season and Pulis’s tenure at the club. The next manager has a lot of work to be done on his squad but not too much.
A new goalkeeper, right-back, winger and maybe even a new striker should be amongst their top buys. However, they should also look into the possibility of adding another centre-back. Someone versatile enough to play across the back-line, which is a very useful quality to have.
Someone exactly like Jonas Knudsen and Wales Online is reporting that the Riverside club are keen on a move. The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away and the fact that his contract expires at the end of the current season does play a part in that.
It means that Middlesbrough don’t have to spend too much on adding him which is a boost. They need a boost to help them move forward and adding someone as versatile and talented as Jonas Knudsen will help.
Currently contracted to Ipswich Town, the 26-year-old has a boatload of experience in the Championship. He’s made just under 150 appearances and you cannot buy that kind of experience.
That will further help Boro, along with the fact that Knudsen can slip in as a left-back or even a centre-back.
It’s a rare talent in this day and age with the Ipswich Town star doing relatively well in the second-tier. For a club like Middlesbrough, adding someone like that will help move them forward.
