Chelsea recorded their best performance of the season as they eased to a 5-1 win over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle never really got going in the match and Chelsea went 3-0 up within 17 minutes. The result means Newcastle have dropped into the relegation zone on goal difference after Sunderland’s win against Manchester United.
Chelsea took the lead inside five minutes after an exquisite pass from Willian put Diego Costa through on goal and the striker produced a good finish from a tight angle. Pedro intercepted a misplaced pass from Rolando Aarons as he raced through to put Chelsea 2-0 up inside nine minutes. For the third goal, Costa turned the provider for Willian as the Brazilian put The Blues 3-0 up inside 17 minutes.
Newcastle improved in the second half but once again their defending wasn’t good enough. Cesc Fabregas picked out Pedro with a delightful lobbed pass just before the hour mark to as the former Barcelona player scored his second of the game.
From that point on, Chelsea looked comfortable and the game was already won. They added a fifth when substitute Bertrand Traore fired inside the near post from Azpilicueta’s cross. Andros Townsend pulled one back for Newcastle in the 90th minute but this was still Chelsea’s best performances of the season.
The only downside of the game for Chelsea was the injury to their captain John Terry. The defender limped off in the first-half with a hamstring injury and is now a doubt for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Paris St-Germain.
