Match Report: Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 Leeds United

Leeds United were absolutely battered by EFL Championship leaders Wolves, as they were beaten 4-1 by Nuno Espirito Santo’s men at the Molineux Stadium, on Wednesday night.

There were no changes made to the line-up by manager Thomas Christiansen following their 2-1 win over Middlesbrough. The game was off to a brisk start with both the sides testing the opposition keeper early on.

However, it was the home team who took the lead 15 minutes into the game, when Barry Douglas struck a wonderful free-kick after Liam Cooper felled Ivan Cavaleiro on the edge of the box. In the next five minutes, Wolves saw three glorious chances go begging as Championship top-scorer Leo Bonatini twice fired narrowly wide and Cavaleiro had an effort saved by Andy Lonergan.

However, they made their domination count in the 26th minute as Cavaleiro fired home a powerful effort, after some nice work by Diogo Jota, to make it 2-0. The Portuguese almost scored his second soon after but saw his effort drift just wide, whereas Leeds managed to test John Ruddy in the Wolves goal via Kemar Roofe and Samu Saiz, but couldn’t find a way through as half-time arrived.

The Whites came back strongly after the restart and had pulled a goal back just three minutes into the second period when Saiz’s delivery was brilliantly volleyed home by Alioski. But a sending off for midfielder Ronaldo Vieira after a second yellow on the hour-mark meant they were left open for the last part of the game and Wolves made them pay.

Firstly, it was Jota who added the third with a nice chipped effort in the 72nd minute and 4 minutes later, substitute Helder Costa made it four, striking home a penalty after Lonergan fouled Bonatini in the box. Leeds had a chance through substitute Caleb Ekuban a little while after, but the summer signing failed to net his header as Wolves ran home comfortable winners.

The defeat was Leeds’ 8th in 11 league games and leaves manager Christiansen under serious pressure. The result sees Leeds finding themselves 10th position in the Championship table, with 26 points from 18 games.

Here’s how the fans reacted to the heavy defeat.
