Manchester United Player Ratings: Martial And Schneiderlin The Only Stars In A Dull Stalemate

Share

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League after a dull stalemate at Old Trafford in which both sides displayed very little attacking intent. Manuel Pellegrini’s men now have 22 points, same as Arsenal but with a better goal difference. Manchester United’s point takes them to 20 points, in fourth place behind West Ham on goal difference.

Louis van Gaal’s side came closest to breaking the deadlock when Jesse Lingard’s flick struck the cross bar six minutes from the end. Here are the Manchester United player ratings from a disappointing 0-0 at The Theatre of Dreams.

David De Gea – 6

Could have easily dozed off for a nap given the fact that he was barely tested.

Antonio Valencia – 6

Strong runs from this right back position in the early going but crosses lacked quality.

Phil Jones – 6

Dealt well with Wilfred Bony and finally looks consistent in a United shirt.

Chris Smalling – 7

Another top class defensive display. Denied second consecutive derby day goal by Joe Hart in the dying minutes.

Marcos Rojo – 6

Never really troubled by De Bruyne or Navas later on, but showed little attacking impetus.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 7

Solid display. Nothing extravagant, but passed it neatly and kept the screws on Yaya Toure.

Bastian Schweinsteiger – 6

Saw plenty of the ball, but failed to create any chances. Subbed for Fellaini as his influence faded.

Juan Mata – 5

Didn’t do enough with the ball and Joe Hart snuffed out his only opening in the game. Booked.

Anthony Martial – 7

His pace and ability had City’s backline troubled on a few occasions but his influence was diminished on the wing.

Ander Herrera – 6

Combative effort in midfield but lacked the usual spark.

Wayne Rooney – 5

His biggest contribution was getting stapled on his head. Sloppy first touch and poor control from the United frontman.

Substitutes

Lingard (for Mata) 67 mins 6

Fellaini (for Schweinsteiger) 75 mins 6

Darmian (for Valencia) 81 mins
