Manchester United Fans Stay Away! Five Reasons Why People Hate the Club?

Share

If you are conducting a poll about which club is the most hated in the Premier League, you might end up with Chelsea at the top of the list, but a close second would be Manchester United. Had you actually conducted a poll a few years ago, United would have easily topped the list. It isn’t just the Manchester City fans who would have voted for the club, Liverpool also have a massive history with the red half of Manchester and that rivalry has only grown bigger since the success United have had in the Premier League.

It was United, who famously knocked Liverpool off the top by overhauling their 19 English league titles and while the Merseyside club doesn’t seem close to winning another title, United have been able to win more trophies than Liverpool during the Premier League era. With great success comes great animosity and we provide five reasons, we could have provided a lot more, as to why Manchester United are hated so much.

The fans

Manchester United fans

This has got to be the biggest reason as to why the club is hated. Growing up during the Premier League era if you were to ask any young person which club they would support, they would say Manchester United, who were winning it all in England. That was fair enough, but these so called fans actually knew very little about the club, tradition or even players. I have known loads of United supporters who come and scream and shout their support, but they can’t tell who is a better player, Djemba Djemba or Kleberson, FYI neither of them were any bloody good. Manchester United do have a lot of knowledgeable fans, but even they cross the line more often than not constantly blaring their support for the club when they are winning and as soon as that stops, they go into hiding only to come out when they start winning again. Most of these ‘fans’ are glory hunters and that should be reason enough to hate.

The arrogance

While the fans might be a bit of a turn-off, it does get worse when it comes to their behaviour. Granted the club have been extremely successful but it seems that Manchester United have the right to win every match they play. You would have rarely heard a glory hunter say that the game against a particular opponent would be tough. This is why the ABU thing started, ‘Anyone But United’, ask any Liverpool fan and they wouldn’t mind Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, heck, even Derby County winning the league, but Manchester United should not win it. The same probably goes for most club supporters, anyone can win the league except Manchester United, you do know how the fans will act once they win the league, you don’t? Stop kidding us.

Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson

Success breeds hatred, Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the most successful managers ever to have graced the game. He won it all for Manchester United and transformed the club into the powerhouse in footballing and financial terms they are today. SAF also was brilliant at pressuring the FA into getting the right decisions and how can we ever forget about ‘Fergie time’? It was like he was presented with the ref’s whistle and was allowed to blow it when he wanted the game to stop. Ferguson also got under the skin of many managers and most of his ‘crew’ would bow before him to ensure he got the points, alright so it was the likes of ex-players Mark Hughes and Steve Bruce mostly, SAF is a great manager, one of the best ever but he wasn’t the most loved by the opposition due to his enormous success and the swagger he carried while managing Manchester United.

The success

The reason why they have so many fans and haters is because of their success and the gloating as well. Manchester United have 20 League titles, 11 FA Cups and 20 Community Shields to their name. They also have won three European Cups, though that isn’t as many as rivals Liverpool, that still is enough to rile up people. Manchester United seemed to have a habit of winning and doing what they wanted, hence some of the slogans like “We’re Man United; we’ll do what we want”. Success often goes to the head and that is the case, well at least of their rivals. They are the most successful club in terms of league titles and they are extremely proud of it.

The players

Patrick Vieira-Roy Keane Clash

Manchester United might have had some of the greatest players in the world but you had a number that you just hated, they might have been extremely talented, but that doesn’t mean they were the best role models. Cristiano Ronaldo was busy showing off his hairdos and skills trying to make the opposition look bad, even Messi is gifted, but he never rubs it in. We had the kung-fu kicking Eric Cantona, the career ending Roy Keane and a whole lot more. You might be able to defend some actions on the pitch, but certain things cannot be condoned, the players did get punished for their transgressions, there are no two ways about it, but they did their bit of getting more people on the “We hate Man United” bandwagon.
