Why Manchester United should go all out to sign Christian Eriksen

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are preparing a January swoop for Tottenham star, Christian Eriksen.

The Dane’s current contract with Tottenham expires next summer and he has repeatedly rejected new offers from the north London club. Instead, the midfielder wanted to leave Spurs during the summer transfer window for Spain, with a move to Real Madrid thought to be his preferred option.

The report adds Manchester United offered around £70million for Christian Eriksen this summer and even have engaged in preliminary contract talks with his representatives, only to see the offer rejected by Tottenham.

But that hasn’t deterred United as they are ready to go again for the Danish playmaker in January, six months before his contract runs out, hoping that Tottenham decide to cash in while they still can instead of letting him lose for free.

After the opening day victory over Chelsea, United have failed to follow up on their clean sheet in the next three games.

In fact, that 4-0 win remains their only victory in the Premier League this season after a poor defeat at home to Crystal Palace was sandwiched in between two draws vs Wolves and Southampton.

The defeat to both Palace and the draw against Southampton brought into question Ole Gunnar Solskjaer side’s lack of creativity and cutting edge in attack. The Red Devils have enjoyed possession in the last two games and taken a lot of shots but very few were on target.

Scoring goals from open play have been a problem as witnessed in the first four games and further investment may be required in January in order to find a creative midfielder.

Christian Eriksen, 27, is one of the best players across Europe in that position and would be an ideal fit for Solskjaer’s United. He is adept at playing on both wings but is most effective when he plays through the middle.

The Dane is excellent in finding pockets of spaces as he likes to get into those areas where he can either shoot on sight or create a chance for his teammates.

The 27-year-old is neither physically blessed nor possesses rapid pace, but he compensates those with his quick thinking, incisive passing and vision.

Despite not being pacey, he never stops harrying the opponent on the ball, which is perfect for the pressing system that Solskjaer is trying to implement at United.

A set-piece expert, Eriksen could be the player that will help share the creative burden from Paul Pogba, who’s been playing in a double pivot with Scott McTominay this season.

Verdict

Without any second thoughts, Eriksen would be a fantastic addition for the Red Devils. He could the signing in January that gives Solskjaer’s side the boost to achieve Champions League qualification this season.
