Aston Villa

Aston Villa have dodged a bullet by not signing this 10-goal Championship star and here is why

Why Aston Villa did a good job by not signing Brentford’s Said Benrahma

Brentford winger Said Benrahma was heavily linked with a move to newly-promoted Aston Villa throughout the summer. In the end, a deal didn’t go through and he had to stay put at Brentford.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith welcomed more than a dozen players at Villa Park during the summer transfer window. He also had Said Benrahma, 24, high on his wishlist as he wanted to add the Algerian to his attacking roster.

In fact, Brentford were even prepared to bid goodbye to the 24-year-old after signing his potential replacement in Bryan Mbeumo.

Benrahma caught the eye of Villa after amassing 10 goals and 15 assists for the Bees last campaign, having only signed the previous summer from OGC Nice. But it appears as if the Villans have done well to avoid signing the 24-year-old from Brentford.

Smith addressed every area of his squad following promotion to the top-flight. As far as wide department is concerned, he signed Jota and Mahmoud Trezeguet from Birmingham City and Kasimpasa respectively, whilst making Anwar El Ghazi’s loan move permanent from Lille.

And the trio have started the Premier League campaign very well, even though Trezeguet was sent off in the 1-0 away defeat to Crystal Palace. In attack, Jota has impressed by far the most and is already proving why he could be considered Villa’s one of the shrewdest signings of the summer.

The nimble-footed Spaniard has linked up well with the likes of Wesley Moraes, Jack Grealish and El Ghazi, giving Villa a really exciting attacking force.

Benrahma is a pacy winger who is a really good dribbler and has a keen eye for goal. While he is an exciting player, Villa didn’t seem like the right fit for the Algerian. Smith knows him from his time at Brentford but there was no guarantee Benrahma would hit the ground running from the first day.

While the 24-year-old has the qualities to thrive in the Premier League, he would’ve been a redundant signing by Smith as the Villa manager had already signed Jota, El Ghazi and Trezeguet.

Verdict

Benrahma has struggled to hit the ground running in the new Championship season. By considering everything, Aston Villa missing out on the two-cap Algerian international looks like a blessing in disguise.
