According to a report in the Daily Star, Manchester United are hoping to offload Argentine international Marcos Rojo and it’s best for the player and the club if this deal was to take place.
Rojo has been symbolic of the problems that United have had since his arrival in the 2014/15 season under Louis Van Gaal.
Rojo is quite a versatile player, as he can play at centre-back and left-back. He had quite a good second half to the 2016/17 season under Jose Mourinho with Eric Bailly but he’s had injury concerns ever since his move to Manchester United. Furthermore, he’s always a mistake waiting to happen, as he’s quite infamous for his clattering two-footed challenges.
United’s biggest issue in recent years has been the central defensive pairing and the 29-year-old doesn’t look likely to help. He signed a new contract only last year but this deal has backfired on United.
After all, they can’t be handing out contracts to players who have performed below the expected standards at a club like United.
They already have far too many centre-backs in the injury-prone Eric Baily, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and young Axel Tuanzebe. None of them is quite the standard of a team that’s looking to challenge for the title or even guarantee a top-four finish.
Lindelof has been good in recent times and Tuanzebe has a very high ceiling but everyone else could be surplus to requirements.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to build a side in his image and it’s hard to get deals over the line even if you’re one of the richest clubs in the world when there’s a lot of deadwood already.
Getting Rojo off the books will help a player like Tuanzebe get more chances to develop. Solskjaer is clearly looking to give younger players a chance and is lucky to have the services of some very talented players.

Marcos Rojo only made 8 appearances last season and wasn’t very impressive in that short time and it remains a mystery as to how he’s been at the club for so long.
The European transfer window is a lot longer than the English window and United need to find a way of offloading him soon.
