Manchester United Opinion: Why the Reds should go all out for Timo Werner

According to a report from The Daily Mirror, Inter Milan are planning to complete a deal for Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku next week.

The Belgian, 26, joined United two summers ago from Everton for a fee of £75m and was a key figure for the Red Devils in his first 18 months at Old Trafford, but ended last season playing second fiddle to Marcus Rashford after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in December.

Inter will make a new proposal for Lukaku for a permanent transfer in excess of £60m, although they still want the payments to be structured over two or three years.

The English transfer window will shut in just over three weeks’ time on Thursday, August 8 and Inter are aware that United would certainly want to replace their 26-year-old striker if he were to be sold.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, who had previously attracted interest from Manchester United, is yet to pen a contract extension with the club.

The Germany international’s contract at Leipzig expires in 2020 and the club have consistently stated that the forward won’t be allowed to walk away for free, so selling Werner this summer remains the only option.

With Lukaku edging closer towards the Old Trafford exit, the Reds should reignite their interest in Timo Werner and sign him this summer to replace the big Belgian.

Werner, 23, is currently regarded as one of the best young strikers in European football. He has been a prolific goalscorer for Leipzig since joining from Stuttgart in 2016 and ended the last campaign with 19 goals and 10 assists in 37 games. He is exactly the kind of player United need at the moment to solve their goalscoring woes.

The German’s technical ability is outstanding and has the nous to time his run to perfection in the box and score goals. He isn’t a selfish player by any means and has the versatility to go wide in order to accommodate other players through the middle if he needs to.

Werner’s pace and playmaking skills are his biggest assets, while his mobility allows him to play out wide as part of a front three, where he can interchange with Marcus Rashford and Daniel James or Anthony Martial.

Verdict

Considering his age, potential and goal-scoring reliability right now, Werner would be a terrific fit at Old Trafford. Solskjaer should quickly table a handsome offer and attempt to sign the 23-year-old.
