West Ham United opinion: West Ham should offload Pedro Obiang

According to a report in the Sun, West Ham United are looking to offload Pedro Obiang from the club after having spent 4 years the club. The interested party is Seria A side Sassuolo, who sold him to West Ham 4 years back.

The Spaniard, who represents Equatorial Guinea in his international career, might seem surplus to requirements at the club after the Hammers splashed even more money on the squad this summer.

West Ham could recoup a small sum with the sale of Obiang after breaking their transfer record of Felipe Anderson last season with the purchase of Frenchman Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The rise of Declan Rice last season saw Obiang’s minutes reduced, with Mark Noble starting most games for his leadership and influence on that midfield.

The Hammers also signed Pablo Fornals from Villareal, who is a creative attacking-midfielder and had a fantastic U21 Euros.

It would be highly unlikely that Obiang will start ahead of the players mentioned above. It didn’t help that Declan Rice was pushed from his central defence position to holding midfield position.

Obiang’s strengths are that he can go from box-to-box and help in transition but with Mark Noble being of a similar profile, it was important under Manuel Pellegrini that there be a player who can dictate the tempo of the game and help play with a lot more possession of the ball.

Obiang, at this moment in time, doesn’t fit in with those principles and it would be pointless for him to continue without much game time to look forward to. West Ham are looking to move into a new era in their history after moving to the London Stadium.

There are also players like Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez, who were unavailable for large parts of last season due to injuries but are rearing to come back into the team after having limited opportunities.

West Ham are looking to maybe topple one of the big-6 this season with some of the big clubs going through a rebuilding phase. West Ham have ambitions of European football and the signings that they’ve made suggest that sort ambition.

It is an exciting time to be a West Ham fan and with Manuel Pellegrini at the helm, we might see a side that might look a lot more in his image in the coming season.
