Why Man United should beat Tottenham to sign David Brooks in the summer

According to a report from the Sun, Bournemouth are planning to offer David Brooks a new improved contract to ward off interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

David Brooks, 21, joined Bournemouth from Sheffield United last summer, signing a four-year deal with the club and he has been a revelation this season. Although Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Nathan Ake have earned plenty of plaudits for the Cherries’ rise this season, the Welshman has also played a crucial role for Eddie Howe’s side.

The 21-year-old attacker has scored six goals and supplied four assists in 22 Premier League games. And it didn’t come as a surprise to see the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham already attracted to David Brooks, willing to pay around £40million in the summer.

Clearly, David Brooks fits the profile at both clubs but it’s Manchester United who are in more need of the player than Tottenham.

Interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has managed to revive Manchester United’s season after replacing Jose Mourinho in December 2018. Under Solskjaer, United have won eight out of nine games across all competitions and now lie just two points off the top four.

It once looked as if the Reds would never be able to come closer to top four but Solskjaer has brought the feel-good factor at Old Trafford and ignited a never-say-die attitude amongst the players. The players have also responded very well, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial currently playing at the top of their potential.

Amongst United’s array of attacking players, Juan Mata is out of contract at the end of the season and although the club has offered him a one-year contract extension, he is yet to sign the deal. The Spaniard is a remarkably intelligent footballer, but his game time has become more and more limited at United since Solskjaer’s arrival at the club.

Truth be told, Mata doesn’t fit Solskjaer’s high-octane, exciting brand of football and United would do well to allow the playmaker to leave the club in the summer, even if it means for free.

David Brooks

In fact, the club needs to be organised as well as shrewd in their transfer dealings going forward and they could do a brilliant job by landing David Brooks as a replacement for the ageing Mata in the summer.

David Brooks is a sublime talent and is currently thriving under Eddie Howe at Bournemouth. It would be a risk for United to spend on a youngster after just a season in the top-flight and there are certain parts of his game that still needs improving but the makings of a top player are already there.

Hence, United must not hesitate to splash the cash on the Welsh star and make him one of their priorities in the summer.
