As per a report from The Sun, Leicester City are eyeing a move for Norwich City midfielder James Maddison as a replacement for Riyad Mahrez. The Championship star has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs and the report has claimed that the Foxes are ready to pay a sum of £17million to secure his signature. However, The Sun has confirmed that the likes of Manchester City are also keen on a deal, meaning Leicester will have to move quickly.
There has been a lot of speculation about Mahrez’s future with Leicester and according to The Sun, Maddison is a top target to replace the Algerian winger. He plays in a similar position as Mahrez and though he lacks pace, his creativity and technical knowledge more than compensate for it.
However, how does he compare to Mahrez? Is Maddison good enough to provide Leicester City with the boost they so desperately need? Let’s take a look at their stats.
In 35 appearances across competitions for Leicester this term, Mahrez has contributed 11 goals and 8 assists. He averages 2.1 shots per game with a pass success rate of 79.1%. In addition to that, Mahrez has made an average of 1.5 key passes and 2.2 dribbles per game while creating a total of 44 chances in 30 Premier League appearances so far. Until now, he has been awarded the Man of The Match award thrice.
Maddison, on the other hand, has made 44 appearances in all competitions for Norwich this season. He has chipped in with 15 goals and 8 assists so far while boasting of a pass success rate of 86.3%. The 21-year-old averages 2.6 shots per game along with 2.7 key passes and 2.4 dribbles. As far as creating chances are concerned, the youngster has created a whopping 104 chances in 39 Championship outings for Norwich City. He has also received the Man of The Match award 7 times so far.
As one can see, Maddison has outperformed Mahrez on every level. It can be argued that it is not easy to play in a league as demanding as the English top-flight but consistency is key and based on what we have seen, the Norwich star is destined for the Premier League. He offers a lot of creativity going forward, which is something the Foxes have been crying out for. Maddison would be a good replacement for Mahrez.
