Goodbye Tomas Rosicky – A Look At The Former Arsenal And Borussia Dortmund Icon’s Career

As the year is coming to an end, former Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund star Tomas Rosicky announced his retirement. The midfielder played professional football for 19 years and as his career spanned for almost two decades, Rosicky began and ended his tryst with football at his hometown club, Sparta Prague. Interestingly, he spent one decade playing for Arsenal after joining the Gunners from Borussia Dortmund. Very few big players spend almost a decade at a club and Rosicky is a legendary figure among the Emirates faithful.

Even for the German club, Rosicky has been one of their best. Nobody can forget how he helped them secure the Bundesliga title back in 2004 for the first time since 1996. Although Dortmund are considered as one of the biggest clubs in Germany right now, that win was necessary for them to establish their dominance even in modern times. They had a five-point deficit on Bayer Leverkusen and with 3 games remaining, they desperately needed to win against Werder Bremen.

Rosicky scored a wonder goal which not only sealed victory but also got them closer to lifting their first league title of this century. His performances were equally as endearing at Arsenal. The fans first sat up and took notice when he scored a brace in his first FA Cup match for the side, against Liverpool. From then on, Rosicky became a fan-favourite and even today, the Arsenal fans still have a soft spot for the iconic Czech Republic player.

As far as the individual honours go, Rosicky was named the Czech footballer of the year thrice in his career. He lifted the FA Cup trophy twice with Arsenal but his heroics in a North London derby against Tottenham back in 2014 was truly spectacular. The Arsenal fans hate seeing Spurs win and anybody who scores against them instantly achieves cult status at the club. Rosicky was already an Arsenal icon but that reputation was sealed further after that game.

Known for signature tricks, creativity and pace in the midfield, Rosicky’s impact on the game of football, in general, will be remembered for a long time. At 37 years of age, the player achieved quite a lot of honours, as well as love from fans of Sparta Prague, Dortmund and Arsenal. His legacy is something that will continue to burn brightly.
