Leicester City Opinion: Why the Foxes should go all out for Andros Townsend

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Leicester City are interested in signing Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.

Townsend, 27, joined Crystal Palace from Newcastle United back in 2016 and has had another impressive season at Selhurst Park as Roy Hodgson’s men finished the Premier League season in 12th place. He made 34 starts and four substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Eagles this season, scoring six goals and providing four assists in the process.

The report claims Townsend, who has two years left on his contract, is valued at around £14 million. The price-tag should be well in the range for Leicester City, who are a very ambitious club and are looking to provide all the tools required for Brendan Rodgers to bring success at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes are among the teams with increasingly realistic prospects of breaking into the top six next season. Rodgers helped the Midlands club finishing strongly last season and is now eager to improve on his solid start to life at the King Power Stadium with reinforcements for next year.

After signing Ayoze Perez from Newcastle United, Youri Tielemans made his loan move permanent last week. And the Leicester tactician is said to still want a couple of signings more to complete his squad before the season starts at home to Wolves. With a distinct lack of width in the team, Rodgers should take a dip in the transfer market and acquire an experienced option ahead of Rachid Ghezzal, Harvey Barnes and Demarai Gray.

Townsend certainly fits Rodgers’ ideal winger mould, always looking to cut in from the right and shoot with his strong left foot. He has done well during his time at Palace so far and enjoyed his finest scoring campaign to date last term. The Englishman has entered the prime stages of his career and a move to Leicester in the summer transfer window will be beneficial.

Blessed with great pace, agility and dribbling skills, the 27-year-old naturally likes to cut in from the right and try to play quick passes and find a teammate or shoot on goal. He is hard-working, tenacious and can press tirelessly when the pressure is on, which is just what the Foxes need.

A tricky and highly-skilled operator down the wide areas, Townsend not only possesses the drive to run aggressively at his opposite number but he can also change the game with his ability of scoring screamers. Without any second thoughts, the ex-Tottenham ace would be a good signing for Leicester and an instant upgrade on Ghezzal.

Verdict

The Foxes need a few new additions more to break into the top six next season and adding a Premier League proven performer like Townsend will help their cause.
