In the end, Leeds United fell just short and couldn’t match up to what their playoff semi-final opponents Derby County could do. The Whites stumbled at the penultimate hurdle and had to watch as the Rams walked past them into the finals.
However, the Leeds United faithful will take some joy in the fact that Aston Villa did walk away with a 2-1 victory. It means that if nothing else, both Leeds and Derby will have another chance next season. But for Marcelo Biesla and his side to do well, they need to update and add reinforcements.
Their squad is far from perfect and with a few changes here and there, they have a chance of getting back to the Premier League. But that’s only possible if they add the right players. The likes of Kiko Casilla, Barry Douglas, Leif Davis and even Patrick Bamford have struggled.
Bamford did find a rich vein of form towards the end of the season but he struggled to find a footing before that. It shows that while Bielsa did play brilliant attacking football, the Whites have a long way to go before they can make it back to the Premier League.
It’s a long road back and one thing they desperately need is another reliable goalscorer. As mentioned above, Bamford struggled for most of the season before finding a rich vein of form towards the end of the campaign.
That put all the pressure on Kemar Roofe and while he delivered by netting 14 goals, few others managed the same.
Pablo Hernandez scored 12 and Mateusz Klich scored 10 but both of them didn’t do it on a consistent basis. That’s what Leeds United need more than anything and someone like Sam Gallagher would be perfect for them.
The Lancashire Post has reported that the Whites are keen on a move for the 23-year-old striker.
Currently contracted to Southampton, Gallagher has struggled to break into the first-team. This has seen Sky Sports report that the club are more than open to letting him leave in the summer and given his talents, there should be a few sides interested.
That’s exactly what the Daily Echo has reported with the likes of Blackburn Rovers keen on a move. However, given the lack of strikers at Leeds United, this is a race they need to win. A talented centre-forward, Gallagher is an old fashioned version striker, who uses his height and aerial prowess to great effect.
At 6 feet and 4 inches, he’s taller than most defenders and combines it well with great technical skill and power in and around the box. It’s what Patrick Bamford used to do but with time, Gallagher can become an even bigger asset to the club.
His strength and confidence in front of goal is excellent, which is what the Whites need.

Sam Gallagher may not be the superstar that Leeds United need, but with time and a little effort, the 23-year-old has the potential to become one.
He has the talent and the work ethic to do well under Marcelo Bielsa and it’s why a move has to be made.
