The Daily Star has reported that Leeds United are interested in making a move for former Manchester United starlet Nick Powell. The Whites are looking for reinforcements ahead of the start of next season and believe that the 25-year-old attacking midfielder is their man.
Currently contracted at Wigan Athletic, Powell is out of contract at the end of the season. This has piqued Leeds United’s interest, as they start the search for an attacking midfielder to boost their ranks for next season.
Favourites to be one of the two sides in the automatic promotion spot come the end of the season, Marcelo Bielsa and company are doing relatively well. They sit in second place, five points behind Norwich City, a lead that looks unassailable at the moment.
However, the Whites’ position in second place is far from safe as Sheffield United sit a mere two points behind them. Things could get complicated for Leeds United but if they keep their recent form going, then they stand a great chance of finishing in the top two.
Yet, if they do make it to the Premier League, they will need reinforcements to improve their chances of staying up. Adding someone like Nick Powell will help their chances as the former Manchester United star knows what England’s top-tier is like.
Signing Powell for free would represent a good deal for Leeds. His creativity and ability in the final third is something that they have missed at times this season.
While Pablo Hernandez and Mateusz Klich have done very well to help Leeds United move forward, they cannot stay dependent on them. Hernandez is 33 years old and could struggle to keep up with the pace of the Premier League, which would put the onus on Klich to be the main creative man.
There is a chance that the 28-year-old might buckle under pressure, hence, adding someone to help him will ease that.
That someone has to be Nick Powell as the 25-year-old has the ability to change a game on its head when he wants to. It’s a rare trait, one that even Sir Alex Ferguson noticed in the young midfielder and under Bielsa, Powell could finally achieve it.
