Southampton XI fitting in Jannik Vestergaard and Angus Gunn

Southampton are already aiming to make a strong comeback this season after the club narrowly missed out on retaining their place in the Premier League. Manager Mark Hughes will be tasked with the job of lifting the club back to the top half of the table next season. The former Stoke City manager has already completed deals for a few players.

Southampton have signed Borussia Monchengladbach Jannik Vestergaard for a reported fee of around £18million. The Saints have also brought in Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn for a reported fee of around £13.5million. Both players have been brought in to bolster the squad ahead of their new campaign and are expected to slot straight into the playing XI.

Here we take a look at how Mark Hughes’ men could line up next season.

Dream Southampton XI

Manager: Mark Hughes

Formation: 5-4-1

Angus Gunn (GK)

The goalkeeper was signed from Manchester City after much anticipation. Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster showed a number of weaknesses last year and the club needed a new shot-stopper. Gunn is expected to move straight into the starting line-up.

Cedric Soares (RB)

Soares was impressive for the Saints last season. In a wing-back system, he impressed under Mark Hughes last season with his surging runs down the flank.

Jan Bednarek (RCB)

The centre-back was signed last year and was expected to make a major impact but he has taken his time to fit into the squad. He could be handed a regular role under Mark Hughes this season.

Maya Yoshida (CB)

One of Southampton’s best defenders last season, Yoshida was a stalwart at the back of the line. He was a commanding presence and put in consistent performances throughout the campaign.

Wesley Hoedt (LCB)

Hoedt played a total of 28 games for the Saints last season. He too was signed last year and the defender has seamlessly fit into the team.

Ryan Bertrand (LB)

He was fantastic. Once again, he was impressive for the club, making a total of 35 appearances in the league, producing 4 assists. He will once again play a huge role for the team this season.

Dusan Tadic (RM)

Tadic didn’t enjoy the best of campaigns last time around but the player is one of the Saints’ most creative midfielders and his presence will be vital.

Dusan Tadic

Oriol Romeu (CM)

The former Chelsea man brings stability and cohesion in the middle of the park. He was a defensive powerhouse for Southampton last season, commanding the midfield with his presence.

James Ward-Prowse (CM)

The midfielder’s passing ability and set-piece quality is vital for the Saints and Mark Hughes will need him to be at his best next season.

Nathan Redmond (LM)

Redmond was impressive for the Saints in his debut season with the club but his form dipped a little last time out. Nevertheless, he too will be a regular for Mark Hughes next season.

Charlie Austin (ST)

The former QPR man was arguably their best striker last season, scoring 7 goals in 14 appearances for the club. He should be leading the line this time out for Mark Hughes.
