Here are two players Burnley should offload this January

Burnley have made an underwhelming start to the season, especially when compared to how they played last year. It is partly due to the fact that they had to start this season early because of Europa League qualifiers. In addition, Sean Dyche’s men didn’t have the experience of handling three games a week.

Hence, getting knocked out of the European competition is a blessing in disguise. The team can now concentrate back on getting back on track in the league, in which the first few games have been sub-par at best.

The Clarets did make a few signings in the summer to strengthen their squad. As a result, with only league football to worry about, they can offload two players to possibly gain funds for buying one quality player in January.

Here are the two players Dyche and his men can offload this winter:

Sam Vokes (Striker)

Burnley currently have four strikers in their squad – new signing Matej Vydra, Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood and Sam Vokes. With the rigid 4-4-2 formation they play, the use of two strikers at a time is compulsory.

However, the least used strike man in recent times has been Vokes. The Welshman is more of a backup for the first three strikers and is certainly down the pecking order at the moment. Therefore, if Dyche has to offload a striker, it should be Vokes.

The 28-year-old can be sold to any other club which can offer him regular game time. The Clarets can raise some funds to buy a quality player when the transfer window opens.

Tom Heaton (Goalkeeper)

The injury to experienced Heaton last season opened the door for Nick Pope to arrive in the Premier League. The youngster then had an unforgettable season, which led to him being selected for the England squad that went to Russia for the World Cup.

In August, Burnley bought former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, partly due to a long-term injury to Pope. And truth be told, the 31-year-old has done a terrific job since arriving at Turf Moor.

Hence, it would be wise from the Clarets’ point of view to offload Heaton and let Hart fight for his spot when Pope comes back from injury.
