Why Crystal Palace should hijack Leicester’s move for Nathaniel Clyne

According to the Sun, Leicester City are targeting Liverpool’s right-back Nathaniel Clyne after he returned from a long spell out due to an injury. The England defender got injured at the start of the 2017/18 season and eventually lost his place to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As a result, the 27-year-old would be aiming to get back into first-team action in order to get back into the national team. Leicester are targeting him for a January move and improve their quality in the right-back position. Liverpool spent £12.5m for the player when they bought him in the summer of 2015 from Southampton.

However, Crystal Palace should register their interest in Clyne and look to hijack his possible move to the King Power Stadium. Here’s why:

Clyne could be a quality addition

Roy Hodgson and his men have youngster Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the first-choice right-back and he is doing well for the team. But the young Englishman is still learning his trade in the Premier League, and hence if he makes a mistake, it would be a part of his experience for the future.

Nathaniel Clyne

Joel Ward is Wan-Bissaka’s backup at Palace. However, getting Clyne would be better than all the options they have in their armoury right now. The Liverpool right-back was one of the best in the league when he was at his peak at Anfield, especially during the 2016/17 season.

He is traditional English full-back who concentrates on his defensive duties first, before thinking of making forward movements. Crystal Palace could do with someone like the 27-year-old to take that right-back spot. This will increase their quality in the wide defensive area.

While Leicester require a player to add competition to Ricardo Pereira, Palace should hijack that move and add competition to Wan-Bissaka.

Verdict

Clyne is a fine player who requires a series of games to regain his match fitness and get back to his best. For that to happen, he must make a move away from Liverpool to earn regular first-team minutes in the Premier League.

Selhurst Park should look to welcome him if the Eagles are to improve further defensively. The 27-year-old could enhance the defensive qualities of any team, provided he gets enough game time.
