Various reports emerging in the media claim that Leeds United have signed Polish international midfielder Mateusz Klich from FC Twente for an undisclosed fee. The Netherlands club have decided to sell the 27-year-old, who scored 6 in 30 games for last season in all competitions as well as providing 4 assists.
After some bit of negotiation, Leeds United have finally completed the signing of Klich, who had two years to run on his contract at former Eredivisie champions Twente. This is probably a bid to re-build after a 7th placed finish last time out.
Klich, standing 6ft tall, joined Twente from Germany outfit Kaiserslautern last summer (fee unknown) having made only 4 appearances for the second tier side the previous season. He had arrived at the club from VfL Wolfsburg back in January 2015.
Klich had initially signed for Wolfsburg some four years earlier from KS Cracovia in his homeland, but was allowed to leave and then signed for Zwolle in 2013 for a knock-down price. His own progression did not stop though and he has gone on to play 10 times for the Polish national side.
Apart from turning Hadi Sacko’s loan deal into a permanent transfer earlier in June, Getting Klich over the line certainly represents some relief for the club, the manager, and the fans, given that a really tough season lies ahead.
Leeds look vulnerable since Garry Monk left and more players could follow him out the Elland Road door, but with the Championship looking as open as ever at the moment, all is not lost for Leeds and a couple of decent signings would immediately move them up the theoretical pecking order.
With that in mind, I could not argue with the signing of Mateusz Klich. Now that Leeds have pulled the deal off, I would say that the way things have started this summer, Leeds will be grateful for any interest they can get from players and agents. The Pole would provide a steady influence in the middle of the park for Leeds and so fans shouldn’t get too excited, but he may be exactly the type of player they need if they are to push for promotion.
