Go for it Rafa – This 8-goal speedster could solve Newcastle’s goal-scoring woes

According to a report by Chronicle Live, Newcastle United target Abel Hernandez has confirmed that he will be available on a free transfer this summer.

The Hull City forward struggled for game time at the Championship club last season. He managed to start just 8 games in the league. With his contract expiring in the summer, it is not surprising that the player is open to an exit from Hull.

Interestingly enough, Hernandez managed to score 8 goals and provide 1 assist in just 10 Championship appearances last term and that does speak volumes of his calibre. He also picked up two Man of The Match awards and at 27 years of age, the player boasts ample experience as well.

Considering Newcastle have a solid chance of landing him for free, it does make sense for them to pursue a move for the Uruguayan.

A striker by trade, Hernandez’s finishing skills are absolutely top-notch and his stats are quite impressive. But one area of concern could be his tendency to pick up injuries.

The player missed out on several games last season due to his fitness issues. But given the kind of impact he makes whenever he is on the field, it would make sense for Newcastle to sign him anyway.

As far as the current striker situation at Newcastle is concerned, it does not look too good. The Magpies forwards were criticised time and again for their lack of impact in front of the goal.

The likes of Dwight Gayle, Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic failed to do much, and that caused the club to endure a downward spiral as the season progressed. Despite not being a striker, Ayoze Perez was Newcastle’s top-scorer with 8 goals and that paints a sorry picture for the club.

Mitrovic may have regained his touch during his loan at Fulham but his future remains uncertain as the Cottagers are reportedly lurking around for a permanent move.

In such a situation, it is imperative that Rafa Benitez prioritises the signing of a new striker. Other additions are also needed, particularly on the creative front but an experienced and skilled player such as Hernandez could go a long way in strengthening the team’s firepower up front.

Since they can land him for free, the risk factor is relatively low. Hence, Benitez must definitely pursue a deal for the Hull City star this summer.
