Why Andre Gray Would Be A Good Signing For Wolves

Big spending Wolverhampton Wanderers are lining up a £20million bid for Burnley striker Andre Gray. The West Midlands club have already splashed out £15.8million to sign Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves to complement the deals for Roderick Miranda, Barry Douglas, Ryan Bennett, John Ruddy, Phil Ofosu-Ayeh and Willy Boly.

Gray though is the missing piece of the puzzle; a proper number nine who knows exactly where the net is. Whether the striker himself would accept a drop to Championship football is open to doubts, it seems like his place is not 100% guaranteed at Turf Moor and the club are once again fancied to struggle given the sales they have already made.

The 26-year-old Gray has been on a steep upward curve in his career till date, having first been prolific in front of the goal for Luton Town in the National League back in 2013/14; his true breakthrough year, when he scored 30 league goals before a move to Brentford in the Championship.

Having scored 17 league goals for the Bees in 2014/15, he moved to Burnley where he netted 23 times in this division and gained promotion to the Premier League. Starting 26 times in the top division last season, Gray scored 9 goals and made 3 assists in what was a reasonably successful season for him.

The last time he played at this level though he managed a goal or assist once every 110 minutes and has progressed again since then. He would probably manage to contribute to a goal every single game this time around and with the presence of Helder Costa among others, there is no telling what he could achieve in this division.

Wolves are really backing themselves to gain promotion this term and it’s refreshing to see. So if they achieve their goals then this £20million will look like chicken feed.

It’s a horrible truth but a truth nonetheless that the Championship has become like the Premier League in this regard – money must be spent. Newcastle knew they had to flex their muscles slightly in the market last summer when they spent on signing Premier League players Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle.

True, the Toon didn’t spend any net money at all after selling the likes of Sissoko and Wijnaldum but they did have to ensure they offered big money and big wages to make sure they had a squad capable of promotion. Wolves are doing the same right here, if from a lower base.
