Go for it Lennon – Why Celtic should use the chance to land this 27-year-old star for free

Celtic FC opinion: Hoops in for Adam Matthews – Good move?

According to a report in Scottish Sun, treble-winning Celtic manager Neil Lennon is considering a reunion with former player Adam Matthews during this transfer window.

The Hoops boss is in the market to sign a new right-back, following the exits of Jeremy Toljan and Cristian Gamboa (h/t Scottish Sun). The former left after his loan spell ended, while the latter’s contract ran out.

Furthermore, with Mikael Lustig not signing a new deal, he is a free agent now and a return looks on the cards (h/t Scottish Sun). So, in a way, Celtic are without an out-and-out right-back at the moment.

A few days back, it was suggested that the Scottish champions would sign Sheffield United’s George Baldock, however, the Blades are reluctant to sell him as they set to embark on their new journey in the Premier League. (h/t Scottish Sun)

Here’s why it would be the right move for Celtic to bring Matthews back into their squad this summer:

Matthews would slot in that right-back position

Adam Matthews is one of those full-backs who can operate on either side or can also play a wide-midfielder if required.

Having spent four years at Celtic before, between 2011-2015 and under current manager Neil Lennon, it won’t be hard for him to come back at the Parkhead and reignite his career.

Furthermore, the 27-year-old is a free agent now after his contract at Sunderland ran down without any agreement of an extension. So, the Hoops won’t have to fork out any transfer fee to get him this summer.

Thus, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that this deal would suit both parties, especially the club who are in need of a right-back after losing three at the end of last season.

Conclusion

All in all, we can conclude by saying that it is a no-brainer that Celtic are looking to sign Adam Matthews. This deal should be wrapped up very soon.
