Go for it Leeds United: Gavin Whyte could be the ideal squad player next season

Leeds have had a very disappointing in the Championship, failing to capitalise on their good season last year, falling into 14th place. They still have quality players in the squad and with a few good signings, they could see themselves fly up the table again next season.

One name that is doing the rounds in the papers and on the internet at the moment is Crusaders FC winger Gavin Whyte, who has lit the Northern Irish Football League Premiership alight this season, scoring 21 goals and winning the Ulster Player of the Year.

It has been reported that Leeds are interested in signing the 22-year-old but they are likely to have some competition, with plenty of Championship teams looking to buy a creative spark for their team.

Over the course of the season, four players have started on the wing for Leeds United – Ezgjan Alioski, Pablo Hernandez, Jay-Roy Grot and Stuart Dallas.

Alioski and Hernandez have been the main wingers for the season and they have done quite well. Alioski has 7 goals and 5 assists while Hernandez has 7 goals and 8 assists. They are quite far off the top wingers in the Championship but these are respectable stats – numbers better than a 14th-placed team in the table.

Unfortunately, the form of these two players means it is unlikely that Whyte will be an automatic starter for the Championship side, which may push him to move elsewhere; maybe to a team where he will get more consistent game time.

What Leeds have lacked this season is an impact substitution – a player who can come off the bench and change the game.

Dallas and Grot have 3 goals and 2 assists between them, which is not enough. Gavin Whyte could change that with his pace and skill. He has the ability to make an immediate difference in his squad, which is something that Leeds crave for.

Leeds seem likely to make a move for the player and as long as Whyte understands that he may not start as much as he would like to, the transfer should suit both parties.
