Forget Morata – Why Chelsea must do everything to land this £80m goal machine

Why Chelsea Must Do Everything To Land Robert Lewandowski

Chelsea have been pretty inconsistent in their title defence in recent years and are once again likely to finish outside ‘top four’ following a dismal set of results. Antonio Conte crowned the Blues as Premier League champions in his maiden managerial realm in English football but has not managed to retain the same and might face a dismissal at the end of this campaign.

The rift with hitman Diego Costa cost the Italian severely as he failed to replace him upfront despite spending heavily on Alvaro Morata back in the summer. The ex-Real Madrid forward has faded off lately despite a sparkling inception and Chelsea opted for Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud when the transfer window reopened in winter.

The Frenchman was supposed to be the solution to their striker conundrum but has not been able to live up to the expectations. The London giants are thus likely to reinvest in the transfer market prior to the upcoming campaign and have reportedly set their sights on Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski who remains coy over his future and might explore new opportunities elsewhere.

Lewandowski was mentored by Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, where he rose to fame and guided BVB to win two back to back Bundesliga titles. Later, he moved on a Bosman deal to league rivals Bayern Munich and is now on course to winning his 4th Bundesliga trophy with the Bavarians.

The Polish goal-machine has maintained his prolific scoring record but is yet to ply his trade away from Germany where he moved to at a very young age from Lech Poznan back in 2010. He succeeded there with distinction but is now open to experiencing a new challenge in what could be his last stint at a major European outfit.

Although 29, Lewandowski is still at his peak and has years of football left in him. He is yet to achieve the UEFA Champions League glory and might fancy a move to Real Madrid, one of his major admirers, upon completion of the ongoing campaign. A player of his stature won’t come cheap and a fee of above £80m might tempt Bayern to sell their star striker who still has years left in his current deal.

Chelsea, aware of Real Madrid’s interest, will still try to conclude a deal, as the magnetism of Premier League football might convince the Polish skipper to move. The Blues have a wonderful midfield in the form of N’Golo Kante, Cesc Fabregas, Willian, Pedro and the sensational Eden Hazard.

They will feed Lewandowski inside the box and the forward’s job will be to convert those, which he has been doing for a decade now. The Blues thus need to throw everything to acquire Robert Lewandowski and be back in the title hunt from next season onwards.
